The emerald is one of the most sought-after gemstones in the world. It is one of the oldest stones used by humans. The first deposits were already used in ancient Egypt. The country was also the main supplier of the green gemstone until the 16th century. In Europe, stones from the Austrian Habachtal were also used.
It was only with the discovery of America that stones from Colombia gradually came to Europe. Other important deposits are found in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Madagascar and Tanzania.
Characteristic of the emerald is its so-called jardin (garden), meaning the moss-like, dendritic ramifications and delicate clouds in the stone, which give the green gemstone its unique character and are reminiscent of a mysterious landscape.
